Introduction

The Roanoake Plantation is the tobacco plantation owned by former US Senator John Randolph. The slaves from this plantation are also called the Randolph Slaves. There are about 400 slaves listed for this plantation.

In 2 out of 3 of the wills Randolph left behind, all of his slaves were to be emancipated upon his death in 1833. His brother contested the will, and John's wishes were not executed until 1846. Finally, William Leigh, executor of Randolph's estate, made arrangements for every man over age 40 to have at least ten acres of land in Mercer County, Ohio. However, when they made it there, the townspeople forced them out. So, they moved on.

One of the most successful communities of freed people was established in Rossville, just outside Piqua. Others found Rumley in Shelby County, Hanktown near West Milton, and Marshalltown near Troy. A few even stayed in Sydney despite the threats of violence. Eventually, the Randolphs had acquired enough capital to buy a lot of land. On February 18th, 1857, William Rial, who was once enslaved, purchased lot #13 in Rossville from a white landowner named W.W. McFarland. Here the Randolph Settlement was founded. This would also become the site of the Jackson Cemetery, dedicated to the final interment of these freed people.

The Will of John Randolph included an "Inventory of his slaves to be freed". The numbers below are those who have been identified, located, and profiled and also correlate with the numbers in the Inventory:
